got 5 1 nforce2 going

got 5.1 nforce2 going

I got a abit an7 with nforce2 chipset
Under sound, video and game controllers I used to have Nvidia(R) nforce(TM) MCP Audio Processing Unit Nvidia(R) nforce(TM) Audio Codec Interface version 6.14.462
This worked fine for 2 speakers, but my 5.1 option was always greyed out in vista, so I downloaded the latest vista realtek ac97 codec (after noticing the chipset used it) and overwrote one of my nvidia ones. I went in to the device manager and to "Nvidia(R) nforce(TM) Audio Codec Interface version 6.14.462" and pointed it at the realtek drivers I downloaded, specifically under the WDM directory the realtek drivers made upon unzipping, it installed these drivers and I rebooted.
Then back into windows audio, and wooot, finally I got 5.1 as a option, and guess what, it works :-) If you dont like that stupid soundmax from auto loading, I disabled it in msconfig, still have 5.1 ok. I did get a popup everynow and then saying "These drivers were not made for this version of windows" which is funny cause realtek reckon they are vista drivers, but there is a tickbox in the popup called "STFU and stop bothering me" so I ticked that and nomore annoyances.
Anyways hopefully this helps some peeps with nforce2 based audio and 2 speaker sound who are bustin a nut, like I have been, to get their surround going. YMMV of course.

I've got an Abit NF7S V.2 connected to a 6.1 amp via the digital optical out & this still gives me 2 channel stereo, are you usiing the mini jack cables or optical cable ? missing 5.1 is probably the most annoying thing about vista for me. "Daniel M" wrote in message

am using those minijack cables (if thats what those little headphone type plugs are) straight into a 5.1 amp - Ive since noticed my microphone no longer works though, I can deal with that :-)

I only use the optical out, looks like i'm stuck with stereo until Nvidia remembers to update their beta drivers. "Daniel M" wrote in message

Shuttle FN45 Nforce2 400 tried and failed :-(
at first i thought it works. each speaker plays the test sound. i was a real happy homer, but then i gave winamp a try DirectSoundout to Realtek Digital out.... and it sounds crappy. all other apps the same result...
im back to the nvidia driver, better a clear 2.0 sound than this workaround...
but thanks anyway Daniel... this gives me hope there might be a solution someday :-)

Theres always hope! If I find or hear about anything else I will post in

this group :-)

Where did you get your drivers? The only one I've found is: http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Realtek-AC-Audio-Codec--beta-Download-16706.html
Even by using the US MIRROR site, it's very slow on download...
